This is a common question asked in the salon. Cutting Fine Hair into Bangs, is it right for you.

Cutting fine hair into bangs

You really need to stop and consider the pro’s and con’s before you pick up the scissors. Fine hair is in a category all by itself.  It can be fly away or look very dirty-greasy quickly.  When hair is cut into bangs they can lay almost stuck to your forehead or can be very light and fly away. Static electricity is a problem with extremely fine hair too.

Doing a fringy-textured bang isn’t possible for many fine hair people.  They just don’t have thick enough hair.  It is really hard to razor cut fine hair.  When you razor hair, it makes the hair thinner.  I really don’t recommend razor cutting your fine hair.  You would have to be very delicate when doing it as to not take out too much hair.  A better way of making a textured bang is with scissors.  Point cutting both deep and shallow.   This will give you texture without splitting the hair.

Often people with fine hair have a very thin receding area.  That would be the area around the temple and above.  If you cut hair too far over toward the temple, you will create a hole in the hair.  A mistake people often make when cutting bangs for their children. Definition of Fine Hair Texture, Is Your Hair Fine or Thin

Is your hair Fine or Thin?

Hair texture is classified as being Fine, Medium, or Coarse.  The texture is determined by measuring the circumference (thickness of each hair strand) of the hair. The definition of fine hair texture can be tricky because textures of hair can be very different from one individual to another, You can also have different hair textures on the same head.  It could be finer hair around your face while medium or coarse texture toward the crown.  It can vary greatly on every individual person.
Fine, Medium, and Coarse hair can be present on all individuals including all racial and ethnic types.

There is an easy test you can do to check and see if your hair is fine.  Hold a single hair in between your finger tips,  if you can’t feel anything, then you have fine hair.  If you can feel the hair between your fingertips, then you have medium hair.  If you feel a thick, coarse strand, then you have coarse hair.  This is one definition of fine hair texture.  Fine hair can be almost translucent in appearance at times. This texture of hair often has no elasticity to it.  There is a simple test to do for elasticity.  Hold hair between finger tips,  Pull hair taunt.  Now stretch the hair….. does the hair stretch a lot, a little or did it break.  This can help to determine if you have fine hair. Diffuser Drying Curly Fine Hair for Beautiful Healthy Looking Curls

diffuser drying curly fine hair

Diffuser drying curly fine hair can minimize the frizz, and help hair have a shinier and healthier appearance. The diffuser re-directs the air so it comes out many small holes instead of one large stream. This makes the curls stay in tact instead of blowing them all over separating the hairs individually.
You can purchase a universal diffuser at any store that sells hair supplies or your favorite hair salon should have one.

Diffuser styles

Sox style–  this fits over the end of your dryer with an elastic band. I know in the salon I work at some people like them but I think most prefer the other kind which is a plastic cup.

Plastic cup style–   This style looks like a plastic cup,  it fits on the end of your blow dryer,  it has prongs sticking out from it,  you would put your hair in the cup and the curls will wind around the prongs.
Make sure when you purchase your diffuser that the end of your dryer will fit inside the diffuser.  Some dryers have a square nozzle. I have only seen round diffusers. Continue reading Diffuser Drying Curly Fine Hair for Beautiful Healthy Looking Curls

Drying Fine Hair to add volume

This is one of my favorite platform artist….  Watch this video to find out how he is drying fine hair….

Drying Fine Hair

Drying fine hair really takes less time than other hair types.  The best way I have found to dry fine hair is to rough dry it about 80% before doing any kind of major styling to it.  Vigorously towel drying your hair is a no-no, it will rough up the cuticle leaving you with a tangled mess. Blot water out of hair gently, doing this will result in easier, more manageable blow dry styling.
